HOW TO MAKE A GREAT TITLE PAGE FOR YOUR PHOTO BOOK OR SLIDE SHOW

We have all seen them, and it seems like we are all making them. What am I talking about? Personal hard bound photo books from our digital photos, and slide shows for our teams, families or businesses. The advent of digital photography means that we can share our photos in ways we didn't before. There are tons of software applications that put a series of digital photo into a slide show that is synced with music. Most have a bunch of built in transitions so that you look like a pro with just a little effort. There are also a bunch of sites making physical books from your digital photos. So how do you set the tone with a title page or chapter heading? Read on and I'll tell you.

Standard vacation photo from Florida?

This is a really cool moody photo, but does it tell a story? Is this Cape Cod, the Hamptons or Sarasota? Who knows, and if you're making a book about your Florida vacation you might want to say it up front.

We did a couple of very important things with the photo to make it read as a title page for a vacation to Florida. First and foremost, anyone can now see the state of Florida and the cool text treatment that reads Florida. Next we blurred the photo. We used a gaussian blur which most photo editing software programs have. Why put a blur on the photo? Take a look at how your focus changes from the cool moody photo to the state image and text treatment for Florida. You're telling the viewer what to look at by blurring the background. There's still important visual imagery that will help you fondly remember your trip, but the focal point of your new composition is now Florida.

When was your Florida vacation?

With this title page I now know that it was in September of 2008. You spend months saving for and planning your vacations, so be sure to tell a story with your vacation photos when you return home.
